In the first round of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Ralph Lauren All-American Tournament, Drexel senior Omar Laalej defeated 69th-ranked Davey Sandgren of Tennessee in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the second round of the tournament.

In the second round, Laalej lost in three sets to Jaak Poldma of the University of California. Poldma, who was ranked No. 112 in the ITA preseason rankings, defeated Laalej 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 to advance to the next round.

Laalej also competed in the doubles bracket as he and junior teammate Joe Koebele lost in a tiebreaker 9-8 (9-7) to David Gonzales and Moritz Starke of Pacific University.

In his upset of Sandgren, Laalej continued his strong play this season.

In the team's first tournament of the season, the Sandgren defeated Rodrigo Souza of Old Dominion 6-3, 6-3 in straight sets to win the A-flight singles title at the Hampton Roads Invitational Tournament Sept 24.

Laalej had advanced to the finals after topping Norfolk State's Miroslav Vlcek in the semifinals. In that match, Laalej overcame a 5-0 deficit in the first set on his way to winning in straight sets 7-5, 6-2.

Also at the Hampton Roads Invitational, Laalej and Koebele advanced to the semifinals in A-flight doubles action after defeating Mary Washington's duo of Evan Goff and Bryce Parrish 8-6.

They lost their semifinal match to Kaz Murata and Randy Loden, also of Mary Washington, in a tiebreaker 9-8 (11-4).

Drexel returns to action Oct. 9 when they play the Monmouth University Hawks.
