Editor's note: This is the first installment of a series on the future construction projects of Drexel University.

The University has an extensive landscaping plan as part of its 2007-2012 Master Plan. In next week's issue, there will be information about all of the upcoming and concept projects. Below is a small sample of the projects that are planned:

North Mall Project

This project is planned to help incorporate more green space around the dormitories and add a more pedestrian-friendly walkway from the dormitories north of Race Street to campus.

According to Jim Katsaounis, executive director of communications for Student Life, Drexel is working with the Powelton Village Civic Association (PVCA) to have Race Street closed between 33rd and 34th streets for this project.

"[Drexel] has completed a traffic study at the request of the PVCA regarding the impact of closing Race Street. The plan is for the street to be incorporated into green space, which would be a nice enhancement for the entire community," Katsaounis said.

The North Mall project will start this year with the building of the new 34th Street dormitory located at the current location of the tennis courts behind Ross Commons. The rest of the project will be phased in over many years as surrounding building projects are constructed.

According to the landscaping master plan, Myers Hall will eventually be demolished and approximately three buildings will be built in its place along 33rd Street. The middle of the block, the closed Race Street, and the area next to the Race Street Dormitory will be used to build a pedestrian "gate" to campus.

Lancaster Walk Activity

The Lancaster Walk Project will include a new informal playing field north of the Daskalakis Athletic Center, a fountain, and a revised walkway in front of the Rush Building. According to Katsaounis, the project will occur in conjunction with the renovations of the Daskalakis Athletic Center this year and will be completed in approximately the fall of 2009.
