Children's Hospital hit by fire

A fire broke out on the top floor of the west tower of the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia on Wednesday, October 3. The west tower of the hospital is currently under construction and its top floors are unoccupied.

After construction workers from L.F. Driscoll failed to extinguish the fire, the fire department was called. A fire official said the blaze, which involved roofing materials and insulation, was quickly brought under control. The case is currently under investigation.

The Children's Hospital Public Relations Department released a statement shortly after the flames broke out.

"No smoke entered the hospital and assessment is currently underway regarding whether or not any water damage was sustained. There was no disruption to patient care. During the fire, helicopters for both CHOP and HUP [Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania] were diverted. No ambulances were diverted. Street traffic was impacted for a short period of time."

Philadelphia Police will form unit for casinos

Philadelphia police will create a special casino unit for the city's two proposed riverfront projects to handle increased car and pedestrian traffic as well as crimes, Deputy Commissioner Patricia Giorgio Fox told a community meeting Tuesday.

This special casino unit is a response to the increase in crimes related to the slot parlors. The police unit is currently in the planning stages as to how many officers it will hold. According to the department spokesman, Lt. Frank Vanore, the plan may be similar to the way the department polices special districts for Center City, South Street, and the stadium area.

Volunteers for Patrols Stepping Up

"10,000 Men: A Call to Action" is a campaign to flood Philadelphia's most crime-ridden neighborhoods with volunteer peacekeepers. This campaign has enlisted over 1,000 men so far with high hopes of reaching 10,000.

"I'm not talking about just getting 9,999," said Mayor Street. "There is something to the number of 10,000."
