Sophomore's advice for your first year

Congratulations on completing two full weeks at Drexel. In that short period of time you have more than likely met people who are going to be lifelong friends, partied , met people who are going to be lifelong annoyances, gotten lost in the maze that is Curtis/Randell Hall, played soccer on Buckley until the lights go out and you probably think that you have college life figured out. The next four years are going to be cake, right? Not exactly.

After two weeks of classes last year, I thought the same thing. I had met people that I knew were going to be my friends forever, I had A's in all of my classes, I got my school work done and still had time to party and heed the call of pick-up football games at midnight. I realized quickly though I would not be able to keep it up.

The truth is classes are not that hard the first few weeks. As a matter of fact, they are not that hard the entire first term. It was other things I didn't think I'd ever get sick of that brought me down. You can only keep up partying five nights per weekend for so long. And after a while, you will start to notice those annoying things your friends do. The trick is to just keep chugging along, and know that this is normal.

To combat the problem, get involved in something that you really enjoy. For me it was this paper and going to basketball games. For you it might be building houses for the homeless and playing rugby. These are going to be the things that keep you going and give you relief from schoolwork and roommates.

Once winter term rolls around and it gets too cold and windy outside, you may decide to stay in your dorm and focus on school. While you should spend more time on academics in winter (because they will be harder) don't let that be the only thing you do. Use your Cultural Passport to go to the Franklin Institute or to see a show at World Café Live. I have only two pages of my passport stamped from last year, and I regret it. Winter is a tough time in this city, (especially if you don't have a scarf). Do not let it bring you down.
