The Colonial Athletic Association Blood Challenge will be coming to Drexel University on Nov. 1 this year.
By donating a little more than 713 pints of blood in the previous year, Drexel is the reigning CAA Blood Challenge champion over other schools like Georgia State, James Madison, Hofstra, and rival University of Delaware.
Dr. Rebecca Weidensaul Gigli, associate director of athletics and the head organizer of the blood donation drive, said one of the reasons that Drexel was victorious is its "vibrant, caring community." She also said Drexel athletes, who don't always have the time to volunteer due to their demanding schedules, look forward to this time of year because they can assist with the implementation of the program.
Weidensaul wants to do even more this year, calling for 1,300 students to register by Oct. 29.
In order to gain the attention of new freshman on campus and the rest of the undergraduate population, volunteers wear free t-shirts every Thursday leading up to Nov. 1, which read: "We Bleed Blue & Gold".
Weidensaul urges those who are not sure about giving blood to reconsider by saying: "It's all relative," referring to the possible apprehension involved.
She also emphasized she does not wish to minimize anyone's nervousness about donating, but wants individuals to realize that one pint of blood can save two lives and all donating stations are supervised by trained medical professionals.
The fifteen minute donation process will be performed in various places around Drexel's campuses this year, including the TKE fraternity house, Behrakis Grand Hall in the Creese Student Center, a "blood mobile" on campus sponsored by the law school, and one each on the Queen Lane and Center City campuses.
Weidensaul said it's a "point of pride" here on campus that we regularly do have great turnouts for this event, and the donated blood really can make a difference, whether it be used in this region or is shipped anywhere in the country to persons of need.
She is "very proud" of the Drexel community and its students for participating and wants to win for fear that "Delaware will rub it in!"
