After scoring only two goals in their previous four games, the Drexel field hockey team exploded with five goals to defeat the Appalachian State Mountaineers, 5-3.
The non-conference game, which took place September 16, was held at Williams Field on the campus of Duke University. With the victory, the Dragons are back to .500 with a record of 4-4, while the Mountaineers dropped to 2-5 for the season.
After falling behind early the day before against No. 10 Duke, the Dragons came charging out of the gate against the Mountaineers as freshman midfielder Christina Mastropaolo scored her second goal of the season 55 seconds into the game. Senior forward Emily Horvat made the score 2-0 when she scored her first goal of the season by finishing off a shot by teammate Amanda Kicera that got through the Mountaineers goalkeeper. Less than six minutes later, the lead would grow to 3-0. On a penalty corner, 2006 team MVP Sarah Gostomski passed to sophomore Jen Bolger, who took the pass and put it into the back of the net for her second goal of the year. A Mountaineers goal with three minutes left in the first half sent the Dragons into halftime with a 3-1 advantage.
Sophomore Carolina Gibernau continued Drexel's offensive attack when she scored on a penalty stroke for her fourth goal of the year. Gibernau is now a perfect 3-for-3 on penalty strokes for the season. Now leading by three goals, Bolger would score her second of the contest, the assist going to Gibernau, to make the score 5-1. Two goals by Appalachian State cut the lead in half, but with less than three minutes remaining, Drexel was able to hold the lead and notch their fourth win of the season. Drexel goalie Colleen McAndrew, who has been in goal for every second this season, made eight saves on 11 shots on goal.
With the goal and assist against Appalachian State, Gibernau now has a team-leading four goals and three assists for the season, totaling 11 points. As a reward for her fine play, she was named the Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week for field hockey. Earlier in the week, Gibernau scored Drexel's only goal in a 1-0 shutout at Saint Joseph's on September 12.
Perhaps the toughest game for Drexel this season, the Dragons lost 3-1 10th-ranked Duke September 15. The Blue Devils scored two goals in the first 13 minutes of the game and would hang on the rest of the way for the much needed victory as they improved to 4-3 on the season. Gostomski scored the Dragons' lone goal of the game in the second half with less than 14 minutes remaining.
