Editorial: Disfunctional Drexel Public Safety

Editorial Board

Issue date: 9/20/07 Section: Ed-Op
So, our crime statistics lie about the safety of campus. Not only do Drexel students have to deal with high levels of crime, they're mostly unaware of this fact. So, if you're a new student who came to Drexel because of its low crime, you're in for a rude awakening. Consider this The Triangle's first bit of advice to you and don't say we didn't warn you. Try not to carry valuables, don't walk alone and remain vigilant and hopefully you won't be the next victim of a crime.

Luckily, Drexel is in the process of hiring a new vice president for public safety. Hopefully, whoever is hired will bring needed changes to public safety. It's evident that they are needed.

But students: don't just accept this sad fact. A student government exists for a reason. Make sure the USGA knows you are not satisfied with campus safety.

The only way we can get administrators to change the current system is if we overwhelm them with negative feedback about the current model.

Just like a union, we need to band together to improve our learning and living conditions. Most of us pay over $30,000 in tuition and other charges, and for what - so that we can get mugged while President Papadakis plans to build more buildings?

This is unacceptable. Something needs to be done. e-mail usga@drexel.edu and let your opinion be heard.

Disfunctional Drexel?
Is that supposed to be ironic?

Talk about dysfunction...
