Before entering my freshman year of college, I anticipated being overwhelmed with things to do. I thought about how busy I would be with all the things Drexel had to offer. During my first couple of months, I admit that I was very disappointed with how mistaken I was.
My freshman year at Drexel was not what I had expected college life to be like. I went to classes each day, came back to my dorm room and spent time with my roommate. I really felt like I was not taking advantage of the resources and activities on campus. I wanted much more than just going to class everyday.
One day I was walking to class and saw a chalked wall recruiting girls to join the women's rugby team. I had no clue how to play but I figured I would give it a shot. It wasn't like I had anything else to do after class.
I went out for the team and absolutely loved it. I loved being part of the team, playing the game and meeting new people.
For the first time, I felt like I was getting the college experience I had hoped for.
My initial perception of college was very different from how it actually began. For a while I thought maybe I had made a mistake. I thought, "Why did I choose a school that had nothing I would want to be a part of?"
My problem was that I was waiting around as if the opportunities were going to come to my dorm room.
All of the resources and opportunities were out there, but I had a negative attitude and did not make the effort to take advantage of what was available.
I decided it was time for a change and I went out seeking something to enhance my college experience. Once I finally took the initiative to see what Drexel had to offer, I was left with the decision of which student organization I would choose.
My suggestion for students is to get out of their room and commit their extra time to a cause or organization on campus. I really feel it is important to dedicate time to something other than classes. Being in classes can often become stressful and overwhelming and it is very important to have something to turn to in order to relieve stress and enjoy your overall college experience.
I have really enjoyed being part of the rugby team for the past year and a half. Since joining the team, I have become the recruitment chair and have been reaching out to girls on campus to join us and give rugby a try. Joining the rugby team definitely made my college experience much more enjoyable and exciting.
Being part of an organization or a team has been very worthwhile and has become a very important part of my college experience.
