The Drexel women's field hockey team got off to a blazing start in the 2006 season, winning their first five games of the year. With solid victories over Rutgers and Villanova, the lady Dragons looked poised to make a CAA postseason appearance.
Things didn't quite pan out as the team would endure a midseason 10-game losing streak en route to an 8-11 record. However, not all was lost for the once promising season as they would win the final two games of the year against tough CAA opponents, Delaware and Towson, providing momentum which the team hopes to continue in the 2007 season.
The 2007 roster will feature the top three point scorers from last season's team, which averaged nearly two goals a game. Forward Emily Horvat will look to lead the offense this season. Now a senior, the three-year starter tallied six goals and eight assists last season for 20 points, which was good for second on the team. Forward Catherine Chiara surprised everyone last year with nine goals and four assists for a team-leading 22 points in her second season after being hampered with injuries her freshman year. Also playing a huge part in the offense will be sophomores Jennifer Bolger, a CAA All-Rookie Team selection last season, and Jordan Freese. Both Bolger and Freese scored three goals for the team last season.
One of the teams' biggest strengths this season may be the Dragons' midfield. Led by 2006 team MVP Sarah Gostomski, the two-year captain will once again manage the Dragons' transition game. Using her superb stick skills and field vision, Gostomski will be the spark plug for Drexel's offensive attack. Sophomore Carolina Gibernau also will play an important role in the Dragons' midfield. As a freshman, she registered a goal and three assists. A member of the Uruguayan National Team since 2002, Gibernau led Uruguay to a Bronze Medal at the 2006 South American Games.
The Dragons' backfield will look much different this season after losing a pair of four-year starters and a three-year starter. With Karie Walton, Heather Bloemker and Cassandra Prentiss now gone, Casey Mouser will make the transition from forward to backfield. Mouser managed to record two goals and six assists last season while playing in only 14 games due to injuries, but her versatility and experience give the team a player around whom to build the defense. Joining her in the backfield are juniors Amy Palilonis and Whitney Enck.
