Drexel University men's basketball player Frank Elegar isn't taking the summer off.
He recently competed for the U.S. Virgin Islands National Team at the Pan American Games. The Games, which took place July 25-29, were held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Elegar and the U.S. Virgin Islands team qualified for the Pan American Games by winning a silver medal at the 2006 Centrobasket Tournament, which was held in Panama last summer.
Elegar got off to a great start in the team's opening game against Brazil. The 6-foot-9 center shot 9-for-13 from the floor and 3-for-4 from the free throw line for a game-high 21 points and he also added seven rebounds, but the team would lose the game 86-81. Elegar struggled against Puerto Rico in the next game, shooting 5-for-15 from the field in a 62-57 loss.
The U.S. Virgin Islands team would get their first win against Canada. Elegar attempted only two field goals in the game, making one of them. He finished with seven points and five rebounds in the 74-67 victory.
Their next game was a Classification fifth-eighth place game against the USA Men's Pan American Games Team coached by Villanova Head Coach Jay Wright. The game was a rout as the United States team led by as many as 27 points before winning by a final score of 84-58. With the loss, the U.S. Virgin Islands team faced Canada in a seventh/eighth place game on the final day of the tournament.
In their final game, the U.S. Virgin Islands team was down 16 points halfway through the fourth quarter. A late rally fell short as Canada held on for the win 69-60.
The U.S. Virgin Islands team ended up in eighth place with a record of 1-4. Elegar led the team in scoring and rebounding, averaging 11.8 points and 5.8 boards during the tournament. His .511 field goal percentage ranked seventh overall in the final Pan Am Games statistics. A starter in each game, Elegar reached double figures in points in every game but one.
Elegar and the U.S. Virgin Islands team were hoping to continue their strong play in recent international competition. At the 2006 Caribbean Basketball Federation Championships, the U.S. Virgin Islands National Team finished the tournament with a 4-1 record. Their only setback came against the Jamaican National Team in the Gold Medal game. Nonetheless, they came away with a second place finish, and the Silver Medal at the games held in Kingston, Jamaica.
