Drexel University has been selected by the USA Table Tennis (USATT) Elite Athlete Committee to host the 2008 U.S. Olympic & National Team Trials for Table Tennis from January 10-13, 2008.
The trials will be held at the Daskalakis Athletic Center and is expected to bring the best table tennis players from all over the country, based on their rankings provided by the USATT. The athletes will compete in a qualification round on January 10, and then will go through three days of finals competition.
"Drexel University is proud and honored to host the Olympic team trials in table tennis. It is exciting for the University to serve as the location of such a high-stakes event in which teams will compete for the privilege of representing the United States at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing," Drexel University President Constantine Papadakis told DrexelDragons.com.
Dr. Eric Zillmer, director of athletics at Drexel was also excited to host the table tennis trials.
"On behalf of Drexel University, I am certain that we will stage a well-run and visible event of the highest competitive caliber that will also serve as a showcase for the sport of table tennis," Zillmer said. "The Olympic Games celebrate an essential part of what makes us human. It is thrilling to me personally that the 'road' to the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, at least for table tennis, will go through Philadelphia and Drexel University."
Besides hosting this event, the city of Philadelphia is also the site of the U.S. Olympic Team Trials for gymnastics, which will take place in June 2008. Philadelphia is one of only two U.S. cities to host two U.S. Olympic Trial events for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
The U.S. Olympic Team Trials for all sports is a collaborative, three-way partnership between the U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC), the sports' national governing bodies and the local organizing committees.
Drexel University, the Philadelphia Sports Congress, Philadelphia Convention & Visitors Bureau, Philadelphia Olympic & International Sports Project, and the area table tennis community make up Philadelphia's Local Organizing Committee.
USATT is the national organizing body for table tennis in the United States. Created in 1933 and headquartered in Colorado Springs, it oversees a wide variety of membership services, the national teams, the rules of the game, the Hall of Fame, and more. USATT is affiliated with the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF), the world governing body for table tennis, as well as the USOC.
