Most of us were surprised to see the new Drexel home page this week, but it was about time. We wholeheartedly welcome the change.
The old web site was not only inadequate and uninformative; it was also not very aesthetic. Granted that yellow and blue are the Drexel colors but making the entire homepage yellow just didn't do the trick. There were no useful links on the main page and nearly everything we needed, from the bookstore to the residence halls to the approximate yearly tuition charges, had an esoteric URL that had to be Googled to find.
For one, this new web site is not a yellow shock in your face. Second, the entire page is not occupied by two giant pictures, advertising "new student days" or "Drexel at BCC" or something else. There is now relevant news about the University, along with the key departments and services at Drexel that students need the most. There are a couple of new sections like 'Today at Drexel' and a direct link to the Drexel Daily Digest, which is just as well.
This redesign is good, but it could have been done better. How about a set of link to student organization sites like the USGA (or even thetriangle.org)? There should be a direct link for information technology, since all students use services provided by IRT.
Lastly, nearly all universities provide information about their community and the city they are located in. We should also have something about University City and the city of Philadelphia on our web site. We know that most of our student body is from nearby, but that doesn't mean no one else is looking at our site.
For the most part, we'd like to extend a thank you to those responsible for finally taking the initiative to cure the headache that was Drexel.edu.
