"One of the main challenges of the 21st century is getting digital information organized," said Lin. "The whole society runs on digital information, yet there are few theories on how digital information should be organized, preserved, and used. We need a generation of dedicated librarians and information professionals who have the skills and knowledge to manage digital information for its effective use. The goal of the project is to prepare new faculty who will help to educate this new generation of librarians and information professionals."
According to Lin, a year will be spent advertising the program and the new students will begin work in September 2008.
"We are looking for students who are passionate in both information technologies and libraries and who are interested in developing innovative ideas to make better use of digital information," said Lin. "Students admitted to this program will also commit to an academic career and will seek faculty positions after graduation."
