The dog days of summer are upon us. While you could sit in the quad staring at the orange cones and police tape around the fountain and imagine how good running through the cold water would feel if it were actually working, it probably won't cool you down as much or be as satisfying as eating ice cream. But with so many brands and flavors, the choice can be overwhelming. Never fear Drexel, The Triangle saves the day again. We've tried all the hot new flavors to cool you down. We've suffered through all the brain freezes and stomach aches so you don't have to. Without further adieu, here are the top five new flavors this year in our Triangle summer '07 ice cream blow-out extravaganza!

5th: Bassets - Gadzooks

This Preston and Steve backed ice cream comes from a Philadelphia institution, Bassets Ice Cream. It is a chocolate ice cream mixed with peanut butter brownie pieces, chocolate chunks and a caramel swirl. The chocolate ice cream is very strong. It's not as sweet as most chocolate ice cream. Instead, it features a very strong, bitter cocoa taste. The chocolate chunks add nothing to this ice cream. The chunks are too tiny to add any taste; it's like chewing through rocks in your ice cream. However, the peanut butter brownie pieces are nothing short of amazing. Finding them in the sea of bitter chocolate is like opening up presents on Christmas. You wish there were more of them and they were bigger. They must have lied about the caramel swirl; its taste is non-existent. The sweetness from the caramel could really do a good job complementing the bitterness of the ice cream, but the caramel is just nowhere to be found.

This is your go-to ice cream if you need to satisfy a big chocolate fix; otherwise, it isn't that special.

Price: $3.69/pint

Where: Wawa or Bassets at Reading Terminal Market

4th: Starbucks Coffee Almond Fudge

"Fresh roasted ice cream."

We're not sure that's the best tagline for an ice cream, even if it is coffee ice cream, but we were willing to give it a try. Coffee ice cream is interesting in that not much comes to mind as to what you can add to vary the flavor. Coffee has such a strong, unique flavor that some flavors don't stand up to it. Besides, think about what you add to your morning cup of joe for flavor: milk and sugar. What exactly are the main ingredients of ice cream? That's right. That said, the Starbucks coffee ice cream itself is top notch. It's got big coffee flavor but it's not too bitter and not too sweet. Starbucks Coffee Almond Fudge adds a fudge swirl and chocolate-covered almonds to the mix. Fudge and nuts have long been sundae staples and their contribution is not lost on this ice cream. Looking down at the dessert, you can see the tan ice cream speckled lightly with the dark brown additives. These flavors come together very nicely. The fudge adds a little sweetness that matches with the similarly structured flavor of the coffee ice cream. The almonds add a good crunchy texture and of course a big nutty flavor.
