It may be incredibly biased, but watching the Phillies is downright painful. Many fans like myself will watch them with the most pessimistic attitude humanly possible. These negative fans can predict exactly how the squad will blow the game on a given day based on figuring out what is the worst possible outcome. From moments like Joe Carter's World Series-winning home run in 1993 to Hunter Pence's walk-off home run last week, each loss is not only painful, but predictable.
In order to keep the fans watching, the Phillies have to give something back. They go on the occasional run and wow the fan base with flashes of incredible talent. Some players go as far as to claim the Phils are the "team to beat." All that seems to do is artificially raise the hopes of Philadelphians everywhere so the team can bring the dream crashing down harder ever.
Even though the Cardinals are having a dreadful season, there is no way the Phillies can reverse 124 years of "history" and beat a team they should, especially on the most haunted of days. I may not have a front row seat for the debauchery, but I'll only be seven rows back.
