Sean Joyce, Drexel's Corporate Sales Manager and Special Events, received a silver medal for his promotional t-shirt design from the National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators (NACMA), at their 16th annual conference in Orlando, Florida.
The shirt was navy blue with the words "Drexel Dragons Athletics" and the logo in yellow on the front of the shirt, and the words "Game Today" on the back, also in yellow. Joyce said the idea came from thinking about how to raise awareness of home games.
"I thought of the idea when I was at the NACMA convention the year before," Joyce said. "Everyone enjoys receiving a free t-shirt, but at the same time we wanted to come up with an initiative to promote our sporting events."
The shirt debuted last year as something that just the staff and some students wore during basketball games.
However, the shirts became very popular with several students and fans asking about the shirts' availability. Joyce said the department plans on increasing the availability of the shirts, and using them to promote all of Drexel's teams next school year.
Joyce and the department are hoping to take advantage of the momentum gained by Drexel athletics this season to help continue to increase school spirit, starting with the upcoming freshman orientation sessions.
"We will be involved with freshman orientation over the summer by hosting an event outside the DAC every Tuesday and Thursday in July," Sean Joyce said. "We will be showing some basketball games from last year, Dawn of the Dragon, and even the Drexel/Virginia lacrosse games."
In addition, there is a possibility of Drexel Athletics and the DAC Pack bringing in some talent for the upcoming addition of Midnight Madness. Joyce and Drexel Athletics are also planning on having Barbecues at Vidas Athletic Complex, which is located at 43rd and Powelton. Vidas, which is home to several varsity teams, was described by Joyce as "one of the nicest in the city and CAA."
Joyce also gave a lot of credit to DAC Pack President Rob Falcone for helping him in his efforts to increase school spirit. Together, they will key in making Drexel one of the hardest places to play in any sport.
