Bernard Gollotti, senior associate vice president of the Department of Public Safety at the University, is resigning from his position effective the first week of July.
Gollotti left Drexel to accept a position as the head of the Department of Public Safety at the University of the Sciences of Philadelphia, according to James Katsaounis, executive director of communications for Student Life and Administrative Services.
Senior Vice President James Tucker has appointed Frederick Carbonara, the current director of public safety, as interim department head while there is a search for a replacement. A search committee has been formed that is chaired by Frank Pizzulo, senior associate vice president for Health Science Campus Operations. The committee also includes Rhonda Karp, senior associate vice president for Equality, disability, and affirmative action, Stacey Kara, executive director of budgets for Student Life and Administrative Services, and Eric Zillmer, director of Athletics.
The search committee is currently creating a job description and sending it out to various campus public safety professional associations and human resources publications. The committee is expecting 50 to 70 resumes and will choose three candidates from the pool. After that, the committee will seek feedback from the students and faculty to help make its choice.
"There will be open interview for students, faculty, and staff to meet the candidates. I will then take all of the comments and recommendations provided from the open interviews into consideration when making the final decision on who will be offered the position," James Tucker, senior vice president for Student Life and Administrative Services, said.
Gollotti has been working in the Department of Public Safety since July 1997. When he first joined, he constructed and followed a ten year plan aimed towards improving public safety. He also has constructed a five year plan before he left.
"They say you should leave a place in better condition than when you came, and so that is why I think its time to move on. Drexel was very different back in 1996," Gollotti said. "There has been a huge change in the quality of the public safety, and in the technology now used." The five year plan has not been released yet, but Gollotti did mention that it will include improvement in all services, more call boxes, extension of the Secret Shopper program, and an increase in officer engagement.
Carbonara, who will be interim department head, had previously served as public safety director responsible for the daily operations of the officers and staff. Prior to joining Drexel, Carbonara was commander of the University City District police substation for the Philadelphia Police.
