Students enrolled in Business 103 held a United States Navy promotional event at the Community College of Philadelphia, June 7.
This event was the culmination of the undergraduate Business 103 class taught by Dana D'Angelo. The goal of the class was to pair up the students with a client who assigns the class a task it needs to complete on a $2,500 budget.
The United States Navy partnered with the class. The class's task was to promote the Navy to students of the Community College of Philadelphia. The matching was done by EdVenture Partners, an organization that pairs up companies with universities all over the country.
The goal of the event was to showcase the advantages that the Navy has to offer, as well as answer any questions and correct any misconceptions that might exist.
The event was fully run by students and used "student-to-student" marketing to convey its message.
Activities included a basketball shoot-around, a Navy trivia game, and numerous giveaways. Prizes ranged from Navy t-shirts and other memorabilia to an iPod Nano.
The event was complete with a DJ and free food, which was donated by the Philadelphia Soft Pretzel Company and City Pizza. About 200 students attended the event.
A recruiter was present to answer questions. Interested students were given booklets and had the opportunity to fill out information cards.
Each of the 24 students in the class was assigned a specific task to help meet the set number of goals. Positions included President and Vice President of the project, as well as department heads of Marketing and Advertising, Public Relations, Event Planning, Research and Reporting, and Finance. The rest of the students were assigned into a department.
"Planning this even helped me to gain real experience with marketing, managing, and people relations, while allowing me to work in a professional environment," said co-coordinator Kegan Heaney.
This was the main, but not the first event held by the Business 103 class. They held an information session at Drexel Career Fairs, as well as a smaller promotional event May 21.
In the previous years, the Business 103 classes worked with the Central Intelligence Agency, General Motors, Cadillac and the Republic of Haiti.
