The Provost released a new Academic Strategic Plan May 31 entitled "The Future is Drexel."

The plan, which encompasses the period of 2007-2012, outlines new academic and research initiatives, which will be implemented at the University over the next five years.

The plan contains five strategic objectives: Enriching the Educational Experience, Promoting a Culture of Research and Scholarship, Advancing Faculty Support and Development, Promoting a Culture of Student Engagement and Executing the Plan. These objectives have been set in order to improve the quality of education students receive.

"The Provost has listened to the concerns of the Government and of the students and worked a plan to address many of our issues," said the recently inducted USGA President, Jeff Gardosh. "The USGA will track the progress of the plan and collect student opinion as it is implemented."

The plan seeks to work within the University's co-op program and urban environment to provide high quality education for students. A review of existing curricula and the integration of co-op into the academic experience will be completed as part of the initiatives. The plan will support the non-traditional student, expand online education, and also work to improve the retention rate of current students by increasing the retention of undergraduates` by one percent each year. In addition, the standards for the Pennoni Honors College will be increased to drive student academic quality higher.

One of the most intriguing things in the Plan was the possibility for new co-op cycles which may be scheduled as four year, two six month co-ops, or four year, two three month co-ops.

"I think it's a good idea [the new co-op cycles] because it gives more real world opportunity to those students doing a four year program," said John Neafsey, a freshman biomedical engineering major.

The plan will also look to improve faculty development by recruiting more high quality professors through tenure and other incentives. Faculty diversity will be sought, and research will be at the forefront of University education. The plan states that the University will be promoted as a comprehensive research university.
