College provides students with an opportunity to achieve. For graduating senior point guard Bashir Mason, playing for Drexel has given him the opportunity to play basketball at the next level.
Mason was recently drafted into the USBL (United States Basketball League).
"I was really excited about getting drafted into the league," Mason said. "I didn't really know much about it so I had to do a little research. I'm still undecided if I'm going to play."
The USBL has spring-boarded the careers of current NBA players such as Raja Bell, Darrell Armstrong and Mike James.
It is a league where players such as Mason can showcase their talents to evaluators around the basketball globe and hope to move to a higher level of basketball down the road.
Even if "Bash" decides to not play in the USBL, he hopes to continue his basketball career, whether overseas in Europe or in the U.S.
After finishing his basketball career, Mason plans to stay in the game, either as a coach or a sports agent.
Even though it was difficult for members of the basketball team to accept the decision of the NCAA tournament selection committee in March that excluded them from the field of 65, Mason still has a positive perspective.
"I think it was a very good season," Mason said. "It was really disappointing [about not getting selected], but looking at it overall, it was something to remember, I guess."
Nevertheless, Bashir walked away with some great memories of the spectacular year.
"My favorite win was at Hofstra," he said. "In conference, the whole team was in foul trouble all game. They (Hofstra) had a great winning streak going."
Mason also loved the post game, especially shaking hands after beating Villanova.
"I thought they had disrespected us before the game. After the game they had to shake our hands with a loss so it was funny."
"Bash" finished his incredible career playing 120 games for Drexel from 2003-2007. A three year starter, Mason averaged 9.4 points and almost four assists each game during his career. He was regarded as one of the best defenders in the CAA and was named to the All-CAA Defensive team from his sophomore to senior season.
