The Colonial Athletic Association's defensive player of the year for lacrosse, Crystal also accepted the John Semanik award for being the most outstanding senior male student-athlete.
"It's a real honor to win an award such as the John Semanik award," Crystal said. "It's a prestigious award and to be recognized by the athletic staff and University is a great accomplishment."
Division I athletes often are portrayed as students who don't care much about their academics and would rather just focus on being great athletes. The awards being given this day act to counter that perception.
"I take a lot of pride in being fortunate enough to be successful both on and off the field," said Crystal. "It takes a lot of hard work, dedication, and determination."
Crystal, who graduates this June with a degree in History-Politics, had mixed feelings about the upcoming commencement.
"It's kind of bittersweet because I've enjoyed my time here at Drexel and I'm going to miss my teammates," Crystal said. "At the same time, I am looking forward to the challenges that lie ahead and figuring out what I want to do with the rest of my life."
Drexel's head basketball coach James "Bruiser" Flint was presented with the NCAA National Academic Achievement Recognition award for having multi-year academic progress scores in the top 10 percent. This was the first year that the award has been given.
