The team generated so much buzz and school spirit at Drexel, and their achievements will not soon be forgotten. And in case you missed it, thanks to the new documentary Dawn of the Dragon, everyone will have the chance to experience an in-depth look at the 2006-07 Dragons.
Former Phillies announcer Scott Graham narrates the tale of the season that was, while pulling back the veneer of a Division-I basketball team to show the thoughts of the players and coaches.
The Dragons went 23-9 and narrowly missed an NCAA Tournament bid this season. Along the way, Drexel knocked off some powerful opponents in Saint Joseph's, Villanova, Syracuse, Temple and Creighton.
"It was fun," Graham said. "They were an interesting team to watch because they had so many elements that complemented each other very well."
Graham covered close to half of the Dragons' games for ESPN2, CN8 and CSN, and as the season wore on, he saw something special about this team.
"They went to Villanova and beat Villanova," Graham said. "They went up to Syracuse and beat Syracuse, and you realize there is a story percolating here. It's probably something that we want to film."
So Graham and his newly-developed production company, Wipe Out Productions, began collecting film on the Dragons. He conducted player interviews and obtained game footage, but the most interesting parts of the documentary were when Drexel head coach Bruiser Flint was fitted with a microphone for an entire game.
"He was pretty amenable to try to help out in whatever way possible," Graham said. "I mentioned it to him once or twice, and then he and the department internally handled the idea of doing it."
For those who watch the games, you know Flint is animated and as exciting as coaches come. To be able to understand what he yells to his players and to listen in during time-outs is an incredible idea, and it would be entertaining, to say the least. However, Wipe Out Productions ran into some unforeseen problems.
