The honors keep piling up for the men's lacrosse team. This time, however, the men's lacrosse coach will get the opportunity to work with some of the best lacrosse players in the country.
Drexel Head Coach Chris Bates was named head coach of the South team for the 2007 USILA North-South Classic.
"You don't really know about this stuff until it comes across your desk," Bates said. "It's exciting to coach guys of this caliber for something this historic."
Drexel's Adam Crystal, the CAA Defensive Player of the Year, and midfielder Mike Filippone will play for Bates on the South team. Crystal is one of seven defensemen on the roster.
"It makes it more fulfilling having Adam and Michael," Bates said. "They've really helped change our program and to have them on the roster is really exciting."
Bates' two assistants, Andrew Baxter and Jordie Olivella, will also join his staff.
By having five members from the Drexel lacrosse organization involved with the South team, Bates thinks that it will help his Drexel team in the upcoming year.
"I think this is great for our program," Bates said. "We want to position ourselves in the best way possible. This is all positive and I think for the younger guys, this is something they can aspire to."
The game will take place May 25 at Calvert Hall in Baltimore, Md. Even though it's just an all-star game, Bates has some goals set for the game.
"I think specific goals are to just go out and have our guys play hard," Bates said. "We want to have fun, but we want to win as well. It's an all-star game and any time we have good players out on the field, it's competitive and we want to win."
With help from Crystal, Filippone and Bates' superb coaching abilities, the men's lacrosse team went 11-5 and earned a share of the CAA regular-season title.
