"We appreciate the USGA's support of Drexel's efforts towards environmental sustainability," Tucker wrote in an e-mail. "We will take their resolutions under advisement."

Drexel plans to add environmentally friendly features to the wellness center.

"The new Recreation Center will meet many LEED requirements, but will not incorporate a green roof. The Rec Center is too far along in the design process to make changes and incorporate a green roof, however, Drexel will incorporate GreenSpec architectural and mechanical systems specification guidelines to make the facility as energy efficient and environmentally friendly as possible," Tucker wrote in an e-mail.

Tucker also mentioned in an e-mail that in his 25 years of experience with facilities, he has seen LEED roofs leak. He added that "we will investigate other new technologies in design and construction that are self-contained within buildings for future projects when feasible."

Hirshorn said he was pleased about Drexel taking an environmentally-friendly approach to their construction.

"I certainly would encourage people to pursue LEED Certification. It's a good guideline," Hirshorn said. "It would be good to demonstrate to the world that Drexel is following sustainable design practices."

Drexel was one of the first colleges in the country to purchase wind-generated energy. Drexel's energy conservation also helps reduce carbon footprints, and the school owns six hybrid cars, among other environmentally-friendly practices, according to Tucker.

Drexel plans to continue giving attention to the environment, said Rose. The University plans to do a survey with the Sierra Club in the upcoming fall to find out more about environmental attitudes on campus and to gauge awareness of what Drexel has done relating to the environment.

The University also plans to form a committee including students, faculty and staff to examine environmental initiatives and programs at Drexel, said Tucker.
