"Denying a pregnancy can result in consequences as tragic as neonaticide - the killing of an infant in the first 24 hours of life," according to an article by Doris Vallone, professor of nursing at Widener School of Nursing.
150 to 300 instances of neonaticide occur in the United States each year, according to Vallone.
"When an unintentional or undesirable pregnancy occurs, none of the choices are easy," writes Vallone.
The case began on January 22 when Donato contacted Delaware County Deputy District Attorney Jay Mattera and alerted him to a "deceased infant" in the Drexel Hill home of a client.
Upper Darby police arrived and discovered the body of an infant in a Volkswagen Beetle. After interviewing family members, the police identified Sardella as the mother.
On May 22 Donato filed a motion to "limit public extrajudicial comment." This motion would prevent anyone involved from speaking with the press outside of the courtroom.
Drexel Public Safety assisted the Upper Darby Police in the dorm search; however, they have not been in contact since, according to Chitwood.
Two calls from The Triangle to the Delaware County District Attorney were not returned at the time of publication.
