"It's an honor. I didn't even know I was considered for the award," Kelly said. "Any student athlete can attest the amount of support you get from the ACHIEVE Center. They always have tutors available."
Kelly broke the school record for points (76) and assists (33) as she led the Dragons to an impressive 12-5 record. Kelly also displays excellence in the classroom, where she carries a 3.48 grade point average as a business administration major.
"Academics are very important," the midfielder said. "They should be important to everyone. It's why people go to college. Lacrosse is just an extra bonus. For me, I think it would be harder if I weren't a student athlete because I would have all this free time on my hands."
Kelly led the Colonial Athletic Association in points and assists per game and was named First Team All-CAA. She holds the Drexel record for assists in a season and in a career. With five assists in her final game, she tied the Dragons' single-game assist mark.
This year, three other Drexel students were also named Philadelphia Inquirer Academic Performers of the Year.
Karie Walton (Field Hockey), Kate Hynes (Women's Swimming and Diving) and Tim Bohinsky (Men's Rowing) were also honored in their respective sports.
"I think it's really easy to get sidetracked, but the staff that we have at Drexel keeps us academically focused," Kelly said. "This is one of the best awards I have ever received."
