"I just want to win a medal this time," Flint said. "We dominated the tournament last time, but we didn't win anything. What I try to do is teach the guys and keep their game sharp and do individual work with the players."
Flint and George Washington head coach Karl Hobbs will assist head coach Jerry Wainright of DePaul University. The USA Basketball Men's Collegiate Committee, chaired by USA Senior National Team assistant and Syracuse University head coach Jim Boeheim, made the coaching staff selections and was approved by the USA Basketball Executive Committee.
Flint hopes that all of his experience in the international level will get him a promotion from assistant coach in the upcoming years.
"I'm thinking the next time I get picked, I may be the head coach," Flint said. "I've been an assistant before, so I'm hoping the next step is getting my own team."
The 2007 FIBA U19 World Championship will be July 12-22 in Novi Sad, Serbia. The United States is placed in Group B for preliminary rounds along with China (FIBA Asia gold medalist), Mali (FIBA Africa silver medalist) and host Serbia (FIBA Europe fifth place finisher).
"The people don't realize that when you are in a situation like this, you work with a couple of the coaches and you get to talk a lot about basketball," the two-time CAA Coach of the Year said. "Coaches are very secretive. But now you're with guys who throw out a lot of ideas. It's a learning experience too."
The U.S. earned its 2007 FIBA U19 World Championship berth by claiming gold at the 2006 FIBA Americas U18 Championship. The 2007 USA squad will be comprised of males 19-years-old or younger (born on or after Jan. 1, 1988) who are citizens of the United States.
Flint finished his sixth season at the head of the Drexel basketball program.
The Dragons finished with a 23-9 record, the best win total since 1995-96. He was named as the 2007 NABC District 3 Coach of the Year for his success during the season.
"I hope one day that because I've been involved with this, I can get a kid to tryout," Flint said. "Slowly but surely, I think we're getting good enough (Drexel) guys to get in this situation."
