Division of Student Life hosted its Tenth Annual Student and USGA Awards Banquet in Behrakis Grand Hall May 16 to recognize student leaders at the University.

Student Life awards are known for their element of surprise. Invitations are sent out to students, without informing them what award they are receiving and their families are also invited without their knowledge. In the past ten years it has become partnership with USGA.

Many University administrators including Dean of Students David Ruth, outgoing Senior Vice President for Student Life Anthony T. Caneris, incoming SVP Jim Tucker, Director of Office of Campus Activities John Cooke, Director of Communications for Student Life James Katsaounis, and Dean of Fraternity and Sorority Life Stephen Rupprecht were also present at the event.

In his opening address, Dean Ruth welcomed students, parents and University administration to the event, "celebrating your accomplishments and achievements." This year's banquet had the theme 'Rise to the Challenge.'

"As it is very important for everyone in a leadership position to rise to any challenge that they may come across we decided this would be a great theme for this years banquet to remind student leaders not to let challenges stand in there way," said Kristin Smith, USGA archivist and a pre-junior majoring in biomedical engineering. "The quote by Joshua J. Marine that we used in the program exemplified the theme perfectly; 'Challenges are what make life interesting; overcoming them is what makes life meaningful.'"

This year's keynote speaker was John Dougherty, business manager of International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 98. Dougherty was chosen by members of USGA.

"As the theme this year was "Rise to the Challenge" we felt as though it would be nice to get someone who is involved in the city and who himself has accepted and risen to any challenge that has come his way," Smith said. "As John Dougherty took over the IBEW Local 98 when it wasn't doing well at all and turned it around to be the billion dollar business that it is today while still being involved in the city's RDA, Variety Club and Local civic associations, among many other things, it seemed as though he would be the perfect speaker as he fully embodies the theme of rising to the challenge."
