Winners of the 2007 Undergraduate Student Government were revealed late Thursday, May 17.

The presidential race, unlike the 2006 USGA election was contested this year. In an exceptionally tight race, the margin of victory favored Jeff Gardosh over Rainer Burrow by exactly 50 votes.

A total of 1,224 votes were counted this year, compared to 1,167 votes last year.

"I'm excited. It was a close race," said Gardosh. "We did the best we could. Everyone got really involved. I'm excited for this new step in the USGA. I've got a lot of great ideas; my team's got a lot of great ideas. Hopefully we'll make the best of it."

Gardosh, who will serve his term with many returning USGA members, is very optimistic about what they can achieve this year.

"A year from now I'd like to have 3,000 to 4,000 votes in the elections, not 1,200," said Gardosh. "That's my goal. We want to get out there, let people know what USGA means and what they can do."

In one of only four contested elections, Stacey Rose won commuter representative. She is returning for the fourth time.

"This is my fourth election with the USGA," said Rose. "This is the first race since my first election with a contested race. I'm actually very excited, one because I have a lot of plans for the commuters. This year I did the SEPTA discount and that was my main focus for the year so I want to focus on all the other smaller goals I had last year, and the new ones I have picked up since then."

Some of the things that Rose wants to accomplish for the coming year include more bicycle racks around campus, and putting a group together to determine the feasibility of online study sessions to help commuters.

"…a lot of them [commuters] are either evening students or they work, they have full time jobs or they have part time jobs, so their schedules are very restricting. So putting them [study sessions] on the web makes them more accessible and helpful," added Rose.

Election chair Stephanie Sullivan, explained that there was a slight increase in the number of voters this year, but that fewer candidates ran. Over the next week, the committee will determine the eligible write-in candidates and contact them to see if they actually want to fill the position.

Positions will switch from the current members to the new ones at the end of the spring term.
