On a day when the sun was out in full force, it was the men of Pi Kappa Alpha who stood tall and won first place in the IFC Volleyball Tournament, May 8 at the Buckley Green Volleyball Courts.
After a first-round bye and a 2-0 win over Delta Sigma Phi in the second round, the eventual tournament winners survived a very intense semi-final match-up against Tau Kappa Epsilon, who had defeated Phi Kappa Psi 2-0 in the second round. Pi Kappa Alpha won 2-1 in a back-and-forth match where momentum seemed to shift on every serve.
With the first-place game between Pi Kappa Alpha and Sigma Phi Epsilon underway, the wind began to pick up, and the effect could be seen on the high serves. After winning the first game convincingly, things got dicey late in the second game for Pi Kappa Alpha.
An attempt to spike the ball failed to clear the net, cutting the lead to 23-22. With Sigma Phi Epsilon now serving to tie the game, the return by Pi Kappa Alpha landed right in between two defenders, making the score 24-22. With their backs against the wall, Sigma Phi Epsilon returned the ensuing serve out of bounds, giving Pi Kappa Alpha the 2-0 win in the final.
Alpha Epsilon Pi, who came into the day leading the Greek Week standings in points, advanced to the semi-finals, but lost to Sigma Phi Epsilon 2-0 in the other semi-final match. The point leaders finished the day in fourth place after falling to Tau Kappa Epsilon 2-0 in the third-place game.
