As part of the kick-off to Greek Week, many students participated in the 15th Annual University City 5K Run. The race, which is part of the Nicholas P. Pipino Memorial Foundation, featured 311 runners ranging in age from 15 to 66.

The winner, Christopher Grace, a sophomore majoring in biomedical engineering and president of the Drexel University Track Club, crossed the finish line with a time 16:54. "I did it last year, and we [the track club] took home the team prize."

The track club also had the first female to cross the finish line. Kate Bowser, a senior Biological Science major, improved her time from 25:00 last year to 20:31 this year.

Even with the first male and female runners to finish, the track club came in second as a team this year to the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity.

Several minutes into the race, an ambulance had to be dispatched to tend to one of the participants.

"The ambulance was needed for a student who experienced a reaction to some medicine she was taking which caused her to fall on the course," said John L. Dougherty, a University alum, and volunteer supervisor for the race. "From my understanding she was patched up by the EMTs on the scene and rejoined her friends after the race."

After the race, the winners in each of the divisions were announced, along with the recipients of the Nicholas P. Pipino Memorial Scholarship. Scholarship winners were evaluated on community and extra-curricular involvement, an essay and letters of recommendation. This year's winners of the $2,500 scholarship were Lora Antanasova, Matthew Magee, Malarie Knox and Stephanie Stayton.

Nicholas Pipino was murdered outside Cavanaugh's Bar and Restaurant 15 years ago. He worked there part-time as a bartender while getting his undergraduate degree from Drexel.

"We're honored to have such a great tribute to our brother Nick," Steve Pipino, Nicholas' brother, said.
