The University's Student Activity Fee Allocation Fund, better known as SAFAC, has moved from Business Operations and is now a part of Student Life.
The decision to move SAFAC was made by new Vice President of Student Life, Jim Tucker. The change became official May 1.
In an e-mail, Tucker explained his reasoning for the move, saying "it made better sense that SAFAC, a student-run organization, would be under the advisory purview of Student Life, which works with student organizations on a daily basis that receive their funding through SAFAC."
SAFAC was "basically the one piece that wasn't under student life," said John Cooke, Director of Campus Activities, and a part of Student Life. SAFAC used to be a part of Student Life before being moved to Business Operations, according to Cooke.
SAFAC had been under of Business Operations "because many viewed it as a business function," David Ruth, Dean of Students, said.
Tucker does not expect the move to change SAFAC in any immediate way. The one change to the organization's structure is that SAFAC advisor Bridget Scanlan will now report to Student Life.
The move's main purpose is not to change SAFAC, but rather to make the allocation process more streamlined and simpler, explained Cooke. The move will also help student organizations plan functions more easily.
Cooke explained that previously, Student Life could not see the funds belonging to a student organization. This inconvenience made it difficult to help the student groups plan events. Now that SAFAC is part of Student Life, planning functions will be easier since Student Life will be able to view an organization's funds.
"Now there is a team of seven staff members in the Office of Campus Activities that can help advise student organizations with their finances," said Tucker. "Before the reorganization the responsibility was with just one person [advisor Bridget Scanlan]."
After the move of SAFAC "Student Life is a one stop shop for student organizations, and we're very excited about that," Ruth said.
