Dragonfire's Webb, Buchman 'terminated' by University

Dragonfire, the online journal of the Pennoni Honors College, has a new identity: The Smart Set.

The Smart Set will retain some of the features of Dragonfire, while some other aspects will be unique to the new publication. Mark Greenberg, Dean of Honors College said in a University-wide email, "the Dragon in Dragonfire has grown up, successfully graduated from Drexel, and is now known as one of The Smart Set. That's also the title of Drexel's new, interactive, multi-media online publication: TheSmartSet.com."

This change began when the previous editors at Dragonfire - Editor-in-Chief Amy Webb and Managing Editor Rachel Buchman - left the publication in December after they were terminated by the University, according to Will Muto, a senior majoring in digital media who was previously employed by Dragonfire.

"I was taken aback," said Muto. "Towards the end of my stay at Dragonfire, things seemed to be going fine; the office had just expanded, and we had been celebrating some big award nominations."

According to Muto, all employees of Dragonfire received an email on behalf of Greenberg on Dec. 22 informing them Webb and Buchman had left the publication. According to Muto, the email from Greenberg said:

"I am saddened to report that, effective at noon today, Amy Webb and Rachel Buchman Howe are no longer employed by Drexel University. The Dragonfire offices are closed until after New Year. We will begin searching for a new leadership team for the publication immediately. A great deal was accomplished by dedicated people in a short time. I sincerely hope that we can build upon those efforts going forward."

According to Muto, Webb had plans on leaving the publication around March to pursue other interests and was planning a smooth transition to the new editorial staff.

"I have heard different rumors, but nothing substantiate. We were never given the straight story from the University," Muto said. "Other employees I was friends with were also left in the dark, telling me that they were unsure of the publication's future."
