The little devils and the children who saw them

Issue date: 4/20/07 Section: Ed-Op
On 29 August, 1967 in the town of Cussac, France, two children were tending cows in a field. Little did they know they would return home that day crying not "wolf" but "space monsters," and everyone in their world would believe them.

According to François Delpeuch, 13 at the time, he was keeping his family's cows from leaving their grazing area with his sister Anne-Marie. Looking behind him, he saw what he at first took to be four children standing behind a hedge roughly 40 meters (130 feet) away. Climbing onto a little stone wall and calling his sister's attention to them, he began to suspect they were, in fact, not children. They were completely black standing next to a perfect sphere shining with an intense light that hurt François' delicate eyes.

The four figures stood more than a meter tall next to their luminescent craft about two meters in diameter. The creatures had pointed heads and noses and sharp chins. Their arms and legs were thin and longer than normal, making anything such as hands or feet not visible. The children were unsure if the creatures wore a black silky suit or if that was their skin color. If they were wearing some sort of space suit, it was perfectly tailored and tight fitting.

Not recognizing his new friends, François called out, "Are you here to play with us?" The creatures immediately began to leave. Two were standing around while one bent over on the ground; the last held a shiny mirror-like object. The first two began floating into the air and entering the sphere head first one at a time. As far as I can tell, it would look sort of like flushing a boneless puppet down the drain - except in air. Number three followed suit and, after scooping an object off the ground, number four joined the others inside the ship.

The ship began flying along a spiraling path into the sky and lowered again until it was 15 meters off the ground.

The ship glowed brighter and brighter before mysteriously sailing off into the sky forever. It left a sulfuric stench and made a breeze-like sound. The children drove their cows home early that day and somehow many became convinced they genuinely encountered a vessel manned by monsters from beyond the moon.
