Commuters at the University will be able to obtain discounted TransPasses from the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority starting fall term.

The University and SEPTA have developed a program where students will be able to purchase TransPasses from SEPTA at a 10 percent discount.

"President Papadakis has agreed to test the SEPTA discount pass program during the 2007-2008 academic year," said James Katsaounis, director of communications for student life and administrative services. "Drexel will match the 5 percent discount from SEPTA for a total discount of 10 percent. The discounted passes will be made available to students, faculty and staff."

According to Dennis Hiller, director of sales at SEPTA, a University administrator will place the order for the TransPasses with SEPTA. SEPTA will give the passes to Drexel at a 5 percent discount. Drexel will then make these passes available to the students and match the 5 percent discount given by SEPTA so that students get a net 10 percent discount on the passes.

The University is currently working on the process by which the passes will be pre-ordered by students, faculty and staff.

"SEPTA requires that the passes be pre-ordered a month in advance, so I am working with IRT to build an online system in which students, faculty and staff will be able to pre-ordered and pay for their passes," Katsaounis said.

Student Union Operations will manage the SEPTA discount program and distribution of the pre-ordered passes will be through the information desk in the Creese Student Center, according to Katsaounis.

"We are looking at developing an online ordering system whereby students, faculty and staff can pre-order their passes with personal credit cards from Drexel," Katsaounis said.

It has not yet been determined how far in advance passes will need to be pre-ordered.

Students have welcomed this new program and many cannot wait to begin using it.

"It's about time they decided to give the commuter population a discount," Samanta Singh, a sophomore majoring in biological sciences, said. "Even though it's not much, it's still something and it helps, since college is costly as it is. And having to commute, it's tough as well. Anything that can be saved is beneficial."

This discount program will be available fall 2007.
