The mother state meets The Triangle's Editorial Board

Students shouldn't be surprised by Drexel's involvement in Loangate, especially the independent student newspaper.

Let's talk about the desire for people to be coddled.

People like to be told that guns cause crime, not criminals and lack of proper parenting. They like to be told they can't have trans-fat foods, and they like to be told that bars will be smoke free. Despite what seems like a strong majority of us vehemently objecting, ridiculous nanny-state laws are permeating Philadelphia and other metropolitan areas. This need to be coddled has, unfortunately, spread to The Triangle's Editorial Board.

New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo announced that Drexel University is included in the schools that "preferred" one student loan service over other student loan services in a quid pro quo involving a "kick-back" of circa $100,000. The Triangle's Editorial Board came to the rescue of the students and admonished the administration for taking said kickback. The Editorial Board writes "[s]tudents trust and expect the University to provide accurate and beneficial information to them." Horse-hockey, I say.

Prospective and current students have to realize that a student loan at Drexel is basically a small mortgage. If a student buys what two private companies (Drexel and EFP) tell them to, without shopping around and getting other rates, they've brought misery unto themselves. It's the consumer's student loan, not Drexel's. Drexel may offer suggestions in return for a cash payout, but no ordinary, reasonable person should take out the largest loan of their life without taking what private companies say with a grain of salt.

Let's set aside the worrisome presence of the New York Attorney General investigating financial transactions in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. It's good to see that this little deal between EFP and Drexel saw the light of day, but how in the world people act shocked and surprised is beyond me. Drexel's endowment has grown by leaps and bounds in the last decade. Drexel hemorrhages money. More students go here now than ever before, and this university shows no sign of slowing down. Where did people think all this money way coming from? The Lollypop Guild? It's a corporation, designed to make a profit. If this is the shadiest of their dealings, I'll gladly elect to be tarred and feathered, and ran out on a rail from 30th Street Station.
