The ninth annual American Cancer Society Coaches vs. Cancer Tourney Tip-Off Breakfast was held at the University of Pennsylvania Palestra March 12 from 8 to 10 a.m.

Drexel coach James "Bruiser" Flint, along with the other five Division I basketball coaches from the Philadelphia area - Fran Dunphy, Temple University; Phil Martelli, Saint Joseph's University; John Giannini, La Salle University; Glen Miller, University of Pennsylvania; and Jay Wright, Villanova University - discussed their selections for the upcoming 2007 NCAA Basketball Tournament and helped raise money for the fight against cancer.

The fundraising goal for the event was set at $60,000, which was met with a total of $70,000 raised, which is a $10,000 increase from last year. The event was attended by 650 people, compared with 550 last year.

The morning began with breakfast and guest speakers, which included a welcome from emcee Neil Hartman, a sportscaster for Comcast Sports Net; Dan Fitzpatrick, president of Bank of America Pennsylvania; and the Charley Dinsmore Survivor Award, which was given to brain cancer survivor Walt "Oz" Ostrowski

Next, the six coaches, along with numerous Philadelphia sports media, shared their picks for the upcoming NCAA Tournament. The talk began with Hartman announcing that two of the six teams, Villanova and UPenn, were given bids to the NCAA Tournament, which sent applause throughout the crowd. Next, Hartman gave his own insight into the 2007 brackets, commenting that Drexel, a team that "truly deserved" to be there, was not picked by the NCAA. This sparked loud applause and calls of admiration toward Drexel head coach Bruiser Flint.

After these initial announcements, the coaches and sports media stated their picks for key games in the upcoming tournament, such as No. 9 seed Villanova against No. 8 seed Kentucky and No. 14 seed UPenn against No. 3 seed Texas A&M, and of course predicted the national champion.

There are two other Coaches vs. Cancer events planned for this year. On April 28, the fourth annual "BasketBall" Gala will be held at the Park Hyatt Philadelphia at the Bellevue. The 12th annual Jim Maloney Golf Classic will take place Sept. 24 at the Huntington Valley Country Club. The fundraising goal for the Gala is $400,000 and the total goal for the city of Philadelphia stands at $1 million, which is a $300,000 increase from last year.
