For those of you living under a rock, or perhaps who aren't into mainstream comic books, there was an event that had been going on since last year and ended a couple of weeks ago - Marvel Comics' Civil War. An accident caused by untrained superheroes resulting in the death of 500 innocents in Stamford, Conn., pushed the United States Government to pass a Superhuman Registration Act (SHRA). The SHRA forced heroes to turn in their secret identities to the government, and included a paycheck, a pension plan and training from the veteran heroes. Iron Man backed the plan 100 percent, while Captain America opposed it completely. Of course, all of the heroes in the Marvel Universe were split down the middle and fought a war against each other. The result of the war was Captain America's surrender (and eventual death), and a victorious Iron Man.

Iron Man's plan from the beginning was to organize superhero activity in something he called "The 50 State Initiative" or "the Initiative" for short. When you became registered as a hero in the United States (and you had to, if you were a superhuman), you pretty much signed up for the army, and you would be trained and assigned to a team that was then assigned to a certain state. Each of the 50 states would then have their own team of super police, so to speak.

To kick off the initiative movement, fan-favorite and acclaimed writer Brian Michael Bendis (Daredevil, Ultimate Spiderman), and up-and-coming talent Frank Cho bring forth the superhero team to end all superhero teams (except for maybe the Justice League, which is up for debate), called the Mighty Avengers. This team is the prime time razzle-dazzle team, which is stationed in New York and consists of seven powerhouses: Iron Man, Ms. Marvel, Wasp, the Sentry, Wonder Man, Black Widow and Ares (that's right, the god of war).

This first issue starts up with the usual comic book plot: a team facing off against some unknown alien monsters while the story is being told in flashbacks. Tony Stark, a.k.a. Iron Man, and Ms. Marvel, a.k.a. Carol Danvers), are conversing about how Tony has major responsibilities, and he asks Carol to lead the Avengers. She takes him up on the offer, and they discuss the new team coming up and how usually it's fate that brings the team together. Tony thinks that it's about time they choose and end up drafting a team based on characteristics and strategy from former Avengers heroes.
