When planning a spring break, how far does ten dollars get you? By train, you can buy a round trip ticket to as far as Newark, Del., but every basketball fan knows Delaware sucks. So where does that leave us?
Well, if you like sports and a warmer climate, ten dollars actually stretches pretty far. Every year, the DAC Pack takes a set of buses to Richmond, Va., to attend the CAA Men's Basketball Tournament. If nothing else, the trip makes for a miniature spring break.
Over the weekend, the high reached the upper 60s. From what we have been used to over the winter, the 60s would be hot as hell. The Richmond Coliseum, where the tournament is staged, is hot for a different reason. The basketball action in the arena is as exciting and compelling as it gets because every team is playing for their postseason lives.
"There are so many reasons to go down," said Rob Falcone, vice president of the DAC Pack. "I think the greatest thing is that you get to go out and watch some really good basketball, be able to hang out with good friends, and inevitably you leave Richmond, win or lose, with a lot of great memories."
This season's tournament featured the fourth-seeded Dragons beating Northeastern 64-50 in the first round and falling the next day in the semi-finals to VCU, 63-56.
Since Drexel was only able to win one game, the buses stayed in Richmond for one night. However, even if the Dragons lost their first game, the DAC Pack would have spent the first night in the hotel to give the students an opportunity to get a taste of Richmond.
"We had one bus go to the local mall for those who wanted to go check out a movie or grab a bite to eat," Falcone said. "We had another bus go into downtown Richmond to go to the bars."
Considering the DAC Pack only had to pay for a hotel one night, they still have funding available for a trip to the NCAA Tournament if Drexel's name is called on Selection Sunday.
"It would be great to have the DAC Pack at an NCAA [Tournament] game," Falcone said. "It would be great at college basketball's biggest stage to be able to have a fan presence."
Fan presence has been enormous all season, as the DAC Pack is always trying to recruit new fans to cheer on the Dragons. The group has received constant praise from Drexel head coach Bruiser Flint, and rightfully so. The trip to Richmond provides an escape from the city for next to no money, and a good time is generally had by all.
If you take the trip to Richmond next year, you will not come back with a suntan or your very own homemade "Girls/Guys Gone Wild" video like some stereotypical spring break. However, you will get the chance to make dozens of new friends from Drexel while experiencing an exciting weekend of basketball.
