Issue date: 3/9/07 Section: News
The Triangle elected Ali Qari as its new editor in chief March 3.

Qari ran against Chief Copy Editor Andrew Fiorentino and won 21-11. The election spanned five days. All contributing members of The Triangle, as defined by its constitution, were eligible to vote. Qari will officially begin as the new editor in chief for the April 6 issue and his tenure will span the spring and summer terms.

"I want to serve the student population of Drexel with a great paper," Qari said. "I think we have a great staff right now that's really capable, so I expect we'll put out nothing less than an awesome issue of The Triangle each week."

Qari will replace current Editor in Chief Anthony Cesarini. Cesarini did not run for re-election.

"My co-op job for spring and summer terms is outside of the city, so I wouldn't be able to contribute as much as I should as editor in chief," Cesarini said.

Qari is a junior majoring in communications at the University. He began working for The Triangle during summer 2006 as a writer for the news section. He was eventually promoted to assistant news editor by Cesarini.

"I think the paper is in a great place right now," Qari said. "During Anthony's tenure as editor, we've recaptured some of the quality reporting and prestige that The Triangle has been missing in previous terms. So from here, I just hope to build on the solid foundation that Anthony has built for the newspaper."

During his time at The Triangle, Qari has regularly contributed to the news section, doing investigative reports and interviews with the University administration. Qari hopes to raise the standards of reporting at the paper and promote investigative and ethical reporting.

"One of the things I want to really work on during my tenure is producing more timely, provocative and informative stories for the University community," Qari said. "There have been times when The Triangle has backed down from some controversial stories, but I want to try and bring a brand of fearless journalism to campus."
