The Philadelphia Street Department announced the expansion of the residential recycling collection program March 1.

Over 93,000 West and Southwest Philadelphia residents, including Powelton Village and Drexel's campus, will join Northeast Philadelphia residents by setting out an expanded list of recyclable items for curbside pickup.

Recyclable items now include flattened cardboard, No. 1 and No. 2 plastic containers.

The Street Department began door-to-door announcement efforts Feb. 19 and has been distributing flyers to inform residents.

Lewis Wendell, executive director of University City District, said that UCD has worked with the city to improve the recycling program's reach to University City and will continue to do its part to publicize the program and ensure its success.

West and Southwest Philadelphia residents are allowed to continue using their blue recycling bins for curbside collection.

They may also add another container by marking it with the word "recycling" or picking up a recycling sticker from University City District at 3940 Chestnut Street.
