After one of the most successful weeks in Drexel athletics history, school spirit filled the Main Building as hundreds of students and faculty gathered for a basketball pep rally Feb. 28.
While the Drexel pep band played and the cheerleaders stirred up the crowd, basketball fans filed onto the first floor and squeezed around the banisters of the second and third floors of the Great Court.
Dan Baker, Drexel's coordinator of broadcast relations, led the pep rally. Baker drove the crowd to cheers as he recounted recent athletic accomplishments, such as the men's basketball victory over Creighton in front of over 17,500 spectators Feb. 17, the men's lacrosse defeat of top-ranked Virginia Feb. 18 and the women's basketball five-overtime win against Northeastern Feb. 22.
Baker also introduced the crowd to Calvin Hicks, one of Drexel's most prolific fans and the prominent shouter of "Defense!" at Drexel basketball games.
Fred Crotchfelt, chairman of the Drexel Alumni Board of Governors, congratulated the men's team for having a great season.
"A great season ends by going to the NCAAs," Crotchfelt said.
Denise Dillon, coach of the women's basketball team, wished luck to the men's team at the CAA championship. James "Bruiser" Flint, coach of the men's basketball team, spoke to the crowd about the team's postseason aspirations.
Kira Karlstrom and Chaz Crawford, seniors from the basketball teams, also addressed the crowd and thanked fans for their support.
University President Constantine Papadakis was in attendance. He and DAC Pack President Tino Cerimele launched T-shirts into the crowd. Papadakis also complimented both teams on the "toughness" they showed during the season.
During the pep rally, Cerimele presented Papadakis and Anthony Caneris, senior associate vice president for student life and administrative services, with DAC Pack T-shirts. Papadakis promised to wear his shirt at the tournament.
The men's basketball team will compete in the CAA Men's Basketball Championship at the Richmond Coliseum in Richmond, Va., March 2-5. The women's basketball team will participate in the CAA Women's Basketball Championship at the Bob Carpenter Center in Newark, Del., March 8-11.
