East Hall will soon be renamed Caneris Hall, in honor of Anthony Caneris, the retiring senior vice president of Student Life and Administrative Services.
"I think that Mr. Caneris has made significant contributions to Drexel University and student life during his tenure, and this is a wonderful way to honor him," said David Ruth, dean of students.
The renaming was approved at the recent Board of Trustees meeting Feb. 28. Chairman Jacovini acknowledged Caneris' pending retirement and noted the outstanding and devoted service he had given to Drexel University over 11 years, not just to its athletic teams and student organizations, but to every facet of University life. By acclamation of the Board and in recognition of that service, the Chair announced that East dormitory would be named in his honor.
"There was unanimous sentiment of the trustees that Tony Caneris' services to the University were so exemplary and he was so beloved by the students that it was appropriate to acknowledge and honor his accomplishments on behalf of the University," Jacovini said.
On Feb. 7, the Undergraduate Government Student Association sent a letter to Ruth, requesting that a residence hall be named after Caneris in recognition of his contributions at the University. The petition said that "the Division of Student Life has greatly improved due to his guidance. Students have benefited greatly from Mr. Caneris' leadership, as he served as a mentor, benefactor and trusted partner to us through the years." Later, USGA requested that the new Race Street residence hall be named after Caneris. However, it was East Hall that was chosen to be renamed.
"While he leaves many legacies at Drexel, I think it important to have a tangible representation," Ruth said. "I hope that the passionate commitment to Drexel and strong work ethic that I have seen Mr. Caneris demonstrate will be passed onto the residents of the soon-to-be-named Caneris Hall."
According to USGA, students like to see the residence halls with names and stories attached to them. By naming a residence hall after Caneris, students will always be able to recognize and appreciate all that he has contributed to our University.
