Dan Steinberg, USGA president and Smith's resident assistant in Towers Hall, had nothing but positive things to say about Smith.
"In death, we often look past the misdeed and poor judgments that the deceased have made, instead choosing to focus on the bright points of their life," Steinberg said. "With Adonis, there were no misdeeds; there were no poor judgments. He was such an amazing human being with incredible potential. He only wanted the best for everyone, and he had a smile that would brighten anyone's day. Adonis' best friends called him an angel - I'm not sure there's any better way of describing how great of a person he truly was."
Smith's friends at the University organized an event called "A Candle Lighting for Our Mac Daddy," which was held on Feb. 27 at Buckley Field.
"Being that every girl loved his personality," Mercado explained, "he earned the nickname 'Mac Daddy,' which has stayed with him and always will."
"I was so proud of how our students formed together to develop a candlelight vigil in his honor," Ruth said. "Under the leadership of Dan Steinberg, our students created a very personal and touching ceremony to celebrate Adonis' life and the impact that he had on their lives. After the ceremony, I had the opportunity to speak with Adonis' father, grandmother and uncle, all of whom said how overwhelmed they were with the outpouring of love, care, concern and respect shown by our students and the University."
The visitation and burial are being held March 2 in East Orange, N.J.
