There are numerous reasons for people to hate St. Valentine's Day, from the expensive chocolates to desperately trying to impress the apple of their eyes, but for freshman Benjamin Tinney, the hatred of Valentine's Day can be summed up in one road trip.
"My girlfriend lives in Wellsboro, Pa., which is about a six-hour drive from here," Tinney said. "When I heard that she was going to be at some church in New York City with her youth group, I just had to surprise her for Valentine's Day - or at least the Friday after Valentine's Day."
That Friday, Tinney rounded up a couple of his friends, John Pizzoferrato and Michelle Brennan, as well as a decent necklace and a stuffed bear he got on clearance at Target for his girlfriend. He was literally going to go the extra mile for love, hoping to surprise Nicole Herr, his girlfriend, with a live appearance.
"That freshman had to have let a herd of stray black cats cross his path before we left," Pizzoferrato said. "The amount of bad luck we had on that trip was unimaginable."
Their bad day started before they even pulled out of the driveway.
"Ben's windshield wipers were frozen, stuck in the middle of the windshield," Pizzoferrato said. "He tried pushing them down, but that only warped them a little. So we drove the entire way with them stuck there."
They got well on their way, but it wasn't until they were on the New Jersey Turnpike that Brennan noticed that Tinney had not printed out "real" directions. "He just printed out a cruddy map of the city as well as driving directions from our zip code to theirs!" Brennan exclaimed. "We had no idea where the hell this place was."
Tinney assured his traveling companions that he could always call the church receptionist and get directions. "His reassurance did anything but bring relief to us," Pizzoferrato said.
Bad directions and getting lost in Jersey were the least of their worries, as Tinney managed to get them into a car accident minutes after getting off the turnpike.
