Drexel administrators have spent significant time, money and resources trying to increase school spirit over the past few years. Some of their ideas have worked; others haven't. Some of the best things to happen to school spirit on Drexel's campus were not because of the efforts of administrators. Rather, it's the national attention that the men's basketball team has justly received because of their accomplishments.
As the team departs for Richmond to compete in the CAA Tournament, we wish them luck and want them to know something: The fate of school spirit at Drexel rests in their hands.
No matter what administrators do, there's just nothing that can raise school spirit like successful, big-league sports teams. Drexel really only has one of those, and it's the men's basketball team.
So, when the men take the court in Richmond on Saturday, they're not just playing for themselves, or for the basketball program, but for Drexel itself - for each and every Drexel student and alumnus.
We wish them luck, and we hope that we'll be watching the Dragons play in the NCAA Tournament this month. Go Dragons!
