While other cities like San Francisco, Santa Barbara, Santa Monica and Santa Cruz recently passed measures making marijuana arrests the lowest police priority, Philadelphia has headed completely in the wrong direction. Medical marijuana legislation is pending in Michigan, Minnesota, New Mexico and South Dakota. Indeed, the general consensus toward ending prohibition grows more every year - it need only take Nevada and Colorado's 2006 election results to show just how close that end truly is.
It's time the people of this city wake up. Vote in a mayor who cares enough about our city to stop arresting otherwise law-abiding, marijuana-smoking citizens, and focus our police efforts on things that matter. Vote out all seventeen Council Members who are out of line with reality - each of them co-sponsored the law. Vote in people who know that these types of laws do nothing in the end but create the misery and violence from which they aim to protect us, just like the prohibition of alcohol and the War on (Some) Drugs.
