The Undergraduate Student Government Association is currently accepting nominations for commencement speakers for the class of 2007's graduation on their Web site until Feb 14.

Each member of the graduating class can nominate one person to address their commencement ceremony. These submissions will be forwarded by USGA to the academic deans of the respective schools and colleges for review.

"This has been done in the past, not to this extent though. I believe last year, only a handful of nominations were received and ended up as dead ends," said Daniel Steinberg, USGA president. "With the quality of the submissions thus far, there's a good chance we'll see these go a long way in the process."

Nominations for the honorary degree recipients are received every year from students, faculty and staff. The USGA posted a link for submissions to its Web site last year as well.

"All nominations are reviewed by the offices of the president and provost," said Niki Gianakaris, assistant director of the Drexel News Bureau. "Selections are submitted to the Board of Trustees for approval."

According to Gianakaris, Drexel awards honorary degrees to individuals who have achieved distinction in their fields, and who have made extraordinary contributions to society. Of particular interest are those individuals who have achieved high levels of prominence in fields of particular interest to Drexel: the arts, humanities, law, business, science, technology and the health professions. While not necessary, it is desirable if the candidate has some direct connection to the University and its academic mission.

If a student's nominee is accepted to speak at the commencement ceremony and accepts the offer, the student will be given a chance to meet the speaker individually, prior to the ceremony.
