Roger Dennis, a legal scholar and legal education advocate, was named the founding dean of the Drexel College of Law by University President Constantine Papadakis Jan. 30.

Drexel Provost Stephen Director said that Dennis' appointment to founding dean is the result of a year-long search conducted by Drexel Law, which was headed by University trustees, members of the CoL faculty and Philadelphia law professionals.

Dennis will succeed Jennifer Rosato, who has been the acting dean of CoL since it opened in August 2006 and will continue to serve as associate dean of students and a professor of law. Dennis will also be responsible for leading CoL through the American Bar Association's multi-year accreditation process, scheduled to begin in fall 2007.

Dennis joins the University from Rutgers University's Camden campus, where he served as provost for the last decade. He taught at Rutgers School of Law in 1981 and then served as its associate dean for academic and faculty affairs from 1987 to 1990, when Dennis was named as acting dean for Rutgers SoL. He served as dean there from 1991 to 1997.

During his time at Rutgers, Dennis expanded the baccalaureate and graduate programs for the Camden campus and spearheaded the country's first doctoral program in the field of childhood studies. He also founded research centers for childhood studies, state constitutional law, public policy and the humanities. In addition, Dennis helped Rutgers to buy and renovate underutilized buildings and create a thoroughfare between the campus and Camden waterfront attractions.

He has also written scholarly articles on regulation and federalism in the law journals of Cornell, William & Mary, University of Maryland and University of Georgia. Dennis also worked in the ABA's section for legal education as vice chairman of its accreditation committee. He has also taught courses in administrative law, corporate and antitrust law, and corporate taxation, among other topics.

The Triangle plans to publish an exclusive interview with the new dean. All above information was transcribed from a Drexel News Bureau press release.
