Engineer calls Darwin 'vacuous'

Issue date: 2/2/07 Section: News
On Jan. 24, Campus Crusade for Christ organized "An Engineer Looks at Darwinism and Intelligent Design" at the Bossone Auditorium. At the event, speaker Mark Lamontia presented his views as a systems engineer on the theory of Intelligent Design.

Lamontia began his presentation by stating that "engineers design things" and that animals look designed though an engineer's lens. Throughout the talk, he compared the anatomy of specimens of natural life to machines and devices engineered by humans, pointing out the specific purpose of the given structure.

Lamontia also cited The Blind Watchmaker by Richard Dawkins and said that he stood in complete disagreement with the views expressed therein. According to him, there is no way that the evolution of something as complex as a bird's wing could be brought about by random mutation. He suggested that it is better explained as the product of intelligent design, much like the parts of an aircraft wing, which are put together by choice.

Lamontia said that scientific laws do not account for the mechanism by which something might be created, but provide proof of its operation. According to him, scientific facts as presented in books on biology adequately illustrate the functioning of biochemical systems, but do not tell us how these complex systems were put together. Similarly, he claimed that the theory of evolution sufficiently explains microevolution of already existing characteristics, but fails to explain how they were all assembled in the first place, and thus does not offer any evidence on the phenomenon of macroevolution.

"Darwinists have published articles on change over time - there's plenty of change over time: The Big Bang, fossils in the ground, different things living before than are living now, plate tectonics. … There's obviously change in the gene frequency of a population evidenced by peppered moths. There is obviously microevolution, as evidenced by differences in size and shapes of finches on the Galapagos Islands. Based on these standpoints, sure, evolution is true."
